Hate Crime Reports and Snapshot Analysis
 
Again in 2007, Michigan ranked third nationally behind California and New Jersey for the number of hate crime incidents reported by law enforcement.

 CRIMINAL INCIDENT DATA 

In 2007 there were 782 bias motivated criminal incidents, an increase from 701 in 2006, and 640 in 2005.

Not required for federal reporting purposes are Gender or Color bias motivation, which are currently only protected under Michigan's Ethnic Intimation Act.  Gender Identity is not a protected basis and is not required for reporting under either the state or federal reporting acts.  *pending analysis from the Michigan State Police

CRIMINAL OFFENSE DATA

In 2007 there were 914 bias motivated offenses, up from 721 in  2006 and 716 in 2005.  Individuals and law enforcement accounted for 749 of these victims.
